I hope you’ve noticed as much as I have how much the awareness and interest in BeyondCorp has skyrocketed in just the past few months alone. Every day I hear something new from an enterprise starting an internal initiative, an industry journalist with a fresh take, or a practitioner finding a gotcha in one of the research papers. Much different story than a year ago when I first started advocating for BeyondCorp, where many were skeptical it would become a thing outside of Google.
In that spirit of building awareness, we’re expanding our BeyondCorp Meetup presence to a few more cities, starting with New York, Boston, and Seattle to complement San Francisco and Austin. I’d love to have you involved, so join as many groups as you see fit, and stay tuned for more to be announced shortly. We’re filling the calendar for the new year already, so expect a ton of action!

We have grand ambitions for the BeyondCorp community, so I’m also excited that we’ll be announcing a new program where we at ScaleFT support folks to be co-organizers of Meetups in various regions across the globe. As a movement with a lot of momentum, this is a great opportunity to get in early as a leader, and to build a strong network of fellow professionals who believe in the next generation of security practices.
You might be a great fit, if you…
If that sounds like you, or if you want to learn more about how the program will work, please reach out to me directly. We’re making some formal announcements later this week, but I wanted to give this list a heads up first.
Here are a few additional things that caught my eye this past week.
Anxious much? Here’s how to secure your company the Google way [TechRepublic]
Matt Asay continues his BeyondCorp series, this time speaking with ScaleFT CTO and Co-founder, Paul Querna. Paul speaks to our fundamental belief that traditional perimeter security is broken and that Zero Trust is the right architecture moving forward. Also, as a result of the new architecture, security software can finally be delivered as a service, opening up new possibilities that didn’t exist before.
How Quid Found a BeyondCorp Partner in ScaleFT [ScaleFT Blog]
There are few things more satisfying as a product marketer than being able to share the success stories of happy customers. Here I talk with a ScaleFT customer, Quid Inc., about their own BeyondCorp journey. What’s exciting about this story is that they are proof that you don’t have to be Google, or operate at Google scale, to benefit from the principles behind BeyondCorp.
New research: Understanding the root cause of account takeover [Google Security Blog]
You’ve heard me talk a lot about the dangers of static credentials lately, which isn’t exactly news, but the threat vector is as real as it gets. Google obviously has a vested interest in protecting their customer accounts, which this research shows. While primarily focused on personal security posture, the findings do apply to corporate security practices.
The Future of SecOps: Behind the 8 Ball [Securosis Blog]
An excellent read from Mike Rothman of Securosis detailing the challenges with Security Operations in the ever changing modern landscape. What was most refreshing about reading this piece is how Rothman also believes that we need to think differently about the architecture supporting our technology stacks. That lines up exactly with what Paul said in the TechRepublic article above.
Identity management to-do list aligns with cybersecurity [CSO Online]
I say this a lot about BeyondCorp and Zero Trust – identity is now defined as a user plus their device at a point-in-time. It’s the only way to make an intelligent trust decision in real-time. As such, it would reason that IAM and security initiatives be aligned. Here, Jon Olstik says that hasn’t always been the case, but more enterprises are coming around.
